This has been quite a year for sightings of the gorgeous northern lights. You may have heard by now that there’s a reason for that — this year, the sun is reaching its peak for solar activity. This ongoing cycle reaches its peak around every decade or so, and it provides us with some of the most breathtaking views. This had led to folks farther south in the U.S. catching a rare glimpse at the lights, too!

Even the slightest geomagnetic disturbance can lead to beautiful views, but the most intense northern lights are those caused by geomagnetic storms. One of these storms took place just last week, and the results can be found all over social media. That said, few are as unique as the footage that Ceara Kirkpatrick managed to capture. As luck would have it, she was on a flight when the storm took place!

Woman Shares Gorgeous Views of Last Week’s Geomagnetic Storm From Her Seat on an American Airlines Flight

According to Ceara’s social media caption, this moment took place at around 11:30 p.m. CST on Thursday, October 10. She was on an American Airlines flight from Phoenix to St. Louis. It seems she had no idea this was going to happen, so when the pilot told her and the rest of the passengers to look outside, she was truly left speechless!

“I could only see it on my phone and I kept saying to my husband like I wish I was on a plane right now because I’m sure their view is unbelievable,” someone shares in the comments, with another admitting, “The tears I would have shed.”

“I’ve seen the lights from an airplane before, too!” a third person shares. “It’s a pretty amazing experience. Once in a lifetime.”
