In less than a week, wildfires in Los Angeles have left countless people without a home. While firefighters continue to work hard to put out these deadly fires, many continue to spread. Amidst such tragedy, folks from all around the world are joining together to help those in need. Ruth, a nearly 90-year-old woman from Altadena, is one of those people.

According to Ruth’s granddaughter, Caroline Cubero, she lost her home to the recent fires. Thankfully, Ruth and her beloved dog escaped just in time. But the rest of her belongings are entirely gone. This includes her two rental properties, both of which were her primary sources of income. Still, despite the overwhelming loss, Ruth has found a perspective that’s helping her move forward. Hear this wise Grandma’s words of wisdom in the video below.

Losing nearly everything in this fire has given Ruth a new perspective. While this loss is most certainly devastating, it’s giving her the chance to start over at 90. And with this new start, she plans to care less about having so many “things” in her life. Instead, she wants to focus more on people and experiences.

“She said she didn’t expect to live much longer as she turns 90 next month,” Caroline writes in the caption of her video, “but now she is inspired to live to rebuild her home and her community and enjoy it.”

While Ruth isn’t one to ask for donations, Caroline and the rest of their family are determined to help however they can. To do so, they created a GoFundMe to help support both Ruth and Caroline’s aunt. Like Ruth, she also lost everything in the wildfires. Based on the reactions this video is getting, it’s safe to say that folks are more than happy to show their support!

“If I’m ever lucky enough to be staring down my 9th decade, I hope I’m as level-headed as this woman,” someone shares in reply to Caroline’s video. “Wisdom like hers doesn’t come easy or free, but it sure is admirable and inspirational.”
