Image shows several competitors from the World Dog Surfing Championship posing on the beach.

Cowabunga! The surf is rad, and the dawgs are hanging 10 on their boards to earn top honors. The World Dog Surfing Championships were recently held in Pacifica, California. Strap your pup into their approved personal floatation device (aka, doggie life vest) and meet the waves at Linda Mar Beach.

Surfers come in every breed and size. The only qualifications are a love of surf and sand, a board, and a willingness to ride the waves to glory. The official video trailer for the event stirs excitement with promises of great surfing and lots of happy doggos.

While this is great fun for humans, dogs love it, too. Competitions award prizes to the top three winners in several categories, and the money raised goes to animal-supporting charities. The beach was full of activity with surf dogs, their owners, and fans. The event is full-scale, with shore activities, the dog surfing championship, vendors, food booths, and more.

This sport was born from a love of surfing and dogs. Many surfers have included their pups on board adventures around the world. Some dogs only surf in tandem with their humans, while others are solo surfers, riding the waves unaccompanied. The excitement starts early and lasts throughout the day. The attendance for 2024 was around 6,000, but the competition is increasing in popularity.
