“You Can’t Sing” Rob Lowe And His Son Give Glimpse Into Their Hilarious Banter

A side by side of Rob Lowe and his son.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to have a famous dad, Rob Lowe and his son, John, have painted a pretty hilarious picture of their home life. Entertainment Tonight shared a clip of father and son engaging in some playful banter during an interview. Although they live among the rich and famous, their relationship feels surprisingly relatable! It’s so cute to see the celebrity dad and his kid poking fun at each other (with love, of course).

In the clip, Rob Lowe asked his son which one of his dad’s movies was his favorite. Then, he asked which of his iconic characters John would like to play in a reboot. Before the younger actor could answer, Rob joked that he should have been cast in the recent musical version of The Outsiders. However, he quipped that his son “couldn’t sing.”

Of course, John couldn’t let his dad get away with that comment without firing some shots of his own! First, he claimed to only have seen three and a half of his father’s films, joking that he couldn’t get through St. Elmo’s Fire. Then, he claimed that Dad was the one who had turned the movie on in the first place.

“You will watch yourself,” said John. “Like, you know when you put on an animal video for a dog? It’s like moving shapes and images and they’re so excited but you’re not really sure if they’re present? That’s what you’re like when you’re on screen.”

He added, “Except every time you make a joke, you laugh the hardest at it in the room.”

In that moment, Rob Lowe knew that his son had defeated him in the exchange. He hung his head in mock shame.

“This is very depressing,” he said.

Social media commenters loved watching this clip of dad and son teasing each other.

“Dad told him he couldn’t sing so he threw all the shade,” said one user. “It’s always YOUR OWN KIDS.”

Another added, “This is LITERALLY the best conversation.”

This hysterical clip reminds us that, even when you’re a celebrity, some parenting experiences are universal — like getting absolutely roasted by your children.
