Some of the steps involved in the candy making process are pretty surprising! For example, did you know that the concoction starts out light brown in color? Stretching the sugar is what makes it turn white! To create the red part, the confectioner adds coloring. Of course, the fun part happens when he twists these two colors into the stripey pattern we all know and love.
After showing everyone how candy canes are made, the confectioner started taking questions from the audience. One customer wanted to know whether or not the giant peppermint stick on display on the back wall of the store was real. The answer was surprising!
“Yes, that is a real candy cane,” said the candy maker. “Not only is it a tremendously large candy cane, it is actually the world’s largest 100% handmade candy cane.”
He added that the oversized treat actually weighs over 36 pounds. It’s also over 16 feet long and 27 years old! Speaking of massive yuletide sweets, check out this giant gingerbread house.
