You’ll Do A Double Take: The Sphere In Las Vegas Sports The Most Realistic View You’ve Ever Seen

Images show the view inside The Sphere where patrons watched the Daytona 500 and felt like they were sitting trackside.

If you couldn’t afford the Daytona 500 in real life, The Sphere in Las Vegas offered an alternative. Watching the race inside the immersive theater gives viewers a feeling of being trackside. The effect and realism involve a lot of algebra, geometry, and calculus (all the math we thought we’d never use). Fortunately for us, some people paid attention to those classes.

That clip was inside The Sphere, not outside at the track. Four-dimensional technologies, a wrap-around holographic screen, an infrasonic haptic system, and 18,600 seats make all this possible. Some quick definitions might be necessary.

Within The Sphere, the “D” in 4D doesn’t specifically refer to a physical dimension. It means the additional sensory inputs that enhance audio and visual stimuli. Patrons within the venue will experience changing temperatures, breezes, and scents that add realism. The venue works to immerse patrons fully so that watching the Daytona 500 truly FEELS like you are at the race.

Reactions to movies and other programming have been favorable. Most people state that, although on the expensive side, the cost is justified. The experience begins before entering the facility. The outside of The Sphere displays 256 million colors using 1.2 million LED lights covering 580,000 square feet of surface area. The dome can display images, play videos, emulate the Moon, or even display a creepy human eye. Yes, the creepy eyeball does blink.

The exterior of The Sphere, showing a giant eyeball, can display anything using LED lighting and computers.

Perhaps one of The Sphere’s best features is that about 70 percent of its energy consumption is supplied by highly renewable solar energy! That is phenomenal, considering that the 28 megawatts needed at peak usage are similar to the energy usage of 21,000 homes.

Please share if you enjoyed learning about the innovative Sphere.
